What makes a good book?

A handful of students have answered my call to tell me the names of the best books they read this year.

Here are three that have been highlighted recently:

Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
Brief Chapter in my Impossible Life by Dana Reinhardt
Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

I found myself nodding my head when I read through the comments kids left about the books they liked. Good books are contagious, and I wasn't surprised to see some familiar titles. These three in particular are books that seemed to run right through my classroom from kid to kid. Often, I recommended these books and they were checked out of the library.

So, I've got two questions:
  1. What makes these books so good that our Media Center can't keep them on the shelves? (Anyone who has read these three titles could tell me...)
  2. What are kids looking for in a good book?
I'm looking for answers, 8th graders! Tell me what you know and what you think.

Looking forward to your insights,
Stenson

I know personally that one kind of a book that grabs my attention is one that really has a point to it. If you just read a book that has no point and just talks on and on about the same thing then people dont have any intrest in it. So one that has a point and that has a mystery or is about tennage "stuff" grabs my attention and would probially grab most of us teenagers too!

I love your answer, Courtney. "Teenage stuff". That makes me smile. I think that "teenage stuff" is stuff that kids your age think adults do not understand. So, it makes sense to me that you would be interested in reading about it because that's just another way to talk/think/learn about how lots of kids your age deal with this "teenage stuff".

Great answer, Courtney. Thanks!

I also agree with Courtney. But I also think that the book has to apply to their life. Because I know that if I like a book, it maybe what I am thinking about, something similar to what has happened to me, good or bad, and also something to get a good laugh. I know that I am always looking for a good laugh.

I've read Twilight,New Moon,Interview with a Vampire, Cirque du Freak, and Vampire Kissing. I LoVe ReADinG VaMpiRE bOOks ,beCauSe I Love CompaRing AuTHouRS POV's. Stephenie Meyers thinks that vampires can be good and bad. Also that they are enemies with "werewolves" .Anne Rice thinks that when vampires drinks blood they kill their "prey". Ellen Schreiber thinks that when a vampire is with their true love they turn into werewolves. Darren Shan (one of my favorite authors)thinks that there are two kinds "Vampires and "Vampanese".

i agree w/ jimlaine ;D she's right! im amazed by vampires, since i started reading Cirque Du Freak, it was amazing reading about vampires they're amazing. all the things they can do...but there comes the point; many authors, many movies, many stories have different views of vampires. some say that they turn into bats...most of the things previously named disagree with that. vampires sleep in sarcofagus... if thats how you spell it. im not pretty sure myself about that, i mean, some say they do, some name it "ridiculous". Vampires drink the blood of humans only? Hmmm well the things i've read and seen say they can drink blood from anything, i think there are some exception, though. Vampires "kill". according to darren shan, they just drink as nescessary ,but there is that sometimes they drink too much, they really kill the person. There is where Twilight and Cirque Du Freak kinda relate...somehow... Then, there is the thing about turning into a vampire. Supposely, if a vampire bites you, then, you eventually turn into one, but then if they bite people to drink their blood , there would be A LOT of people turning into vampires... yea and in cirque du freak,if any vampire (since there are "half-vamires)gives you some of their blood (depends how much) youll turn into a vampire or half vampire. then if your evil and drink too much blood you're a vampanese...
there are a bunch of things anyone can discuss about this vampire thigs but... my last conclusion here is that, everything started after dracula, then people wanted to be creative and changed SOME things about the things dracula did to make their "own" vampire story. then other authors changed those some things, and then some OTHER authors changes the changed SOME other things and so on and so on.... until...we got today's "nu-era" vampires :D
cheers! :D
P.S!!! If you are a vampire obsessed weirdo (check) [not trying to refer to anyone in a mean way] i really recommend the movie "The Lost Boys"

I think I know a good answer for your second question: kids are really looking for a good potentail in a story, a good backround story, something to make them wonder. my teacher taught me about interacting with the text and how it can help you while choosing books. She also taught me how it is a GREAT idea to read the back of the book before reading it or even the first page to make you relise if you really want to read the book first.it also depends on what genre kids choose, ALOT of kids abandon their books because its not the right genre or it is just plain boring! REMEMBER: be sure to stick with a book, if its really boring then you can back out of reading it but sometimes a book can be REALLY boring at first and then it can become one of your FAVORITE books of all time!!!!
